Little Girls Selling Fruit

These enterprising young people sold me some very tasty figs and plums. The one standing next to me is names Jasmina and all the little girls loved my bracelet (that I always wear for Leah) and my ring (which I always wear for Toshi).

They were very skilled at the "hard sell." They pointed out that the fruit was "very good, very cheap, only 1 Euro!" and I couldn't refuse. Plus I was hungry! We had been on the bus, visiting sites for hours at that point and man oh man did those figs look good!

Here you can see me happily clutching the cones filled with bounties of the Earth. The kids made the cones out of a single sheet of notebook paper, rolled up and folded crisply at the bottom. Ingenious!

In the background you can see the remnants of this ancient walled town--on top of the hill is one of the towers from the wall (most of the wall was apparently still intact until this most recent war in the 1990s destroyed it and now it is being reconstructed).

About Me

I am currently pursuing a PhD in Social Welfare at Berkeley, concentrating in local, national and international responses to large-scale disasters, wars, and genocide. To me, social work is not a job. It is a way of life, a faith, and a daily practice. My mother is a social worker and I was instilled with social work values as a young child. I carry those values of respect and compassion for other human beings, the importance of service and integrity, and these values lead me to endorse Barack Obama for President of the United States. Barack Obama represents a new and positive vision for the future of America. He is honest, hard-working, and unafraid to face the nuanced and complex problems of our country and our interconnected world. I am proud to support a candidate who will truly bring change for the American people and for all members of the world community.

What did you know about Bosnia before Ruby took this trip?
